No. Unfortunately PS2 games cannot be played on the PS1 console, because they use different technology. As you rightly state though, the PS2 console was designed to be able to support PS1 games.
When the PS3 is finally released however, don't bin your PS2 console, because PS1 and maybe PS2 games can't be used on it, due to the Blu-Ray Disk Drive.

Yes you can play PS1 games on the ps2 but you cant do it the other way around

PS1 can be played on PS2 but i never needed one of those chips people are talking about i just shoved the game in and it was workin so everyone mentioning a chip is wrong

just ps1 games on ps2 if it was the other way round that would not be good for sales and the technology in the new games are to much for the new systems.
ps1' are 32 bit and ps 2's are 128 bit so the games wouldnt work

you are able to play ps1 games on ps2, if u have the smaller version u can just pop it in and play, but if u have the regular one there' this certain trick u have to do but I'm not sure what it is.

Ps1 to PS2 is possible but there is a chip that you have to attach.

THINK about it-if you could play new games on an old system, why would they have bought the PS2 out?
