You don't check the settings of the port, that's not necessary. Instead, turn the PC all the way off. Try plugging the mouse into a different USB port and turn the PC back on.

If you still have problems, try the mouse in a friend's PC. If it has the same problem, then it's the mouse. They are dirt cheap to replace.

In the future when you ask a question like this, be sure to include as many specs as you can of your PC, including the version of Windows which is usually the most important.

Its probably the mouse since the device cant be recognized. U cld confirm that by using any other spare mouse u have. If it still cant be recognized, it has got to be the port on ur labtop :-)

maybe there is something wrong with the hardware's driver... does your mouse came with an installation CD.... device not recognized means that your OS couldnt recognize the mouse in your system.. try putting another mouse see if it works.. if it worked ,then your port is working just fine... if it also didnt work. chances are your mouse is the one not working

settings are found in the computer management
right-click "my computer" and select "manage"
you "system tools" -> "device manager"
then look at "mice and other pointing devices"
or "Universal Serial Bus controllers".
