Pure science may discover in the lab that microwaves (radio waves of a certain wavelength and energy) exist and then thoroughly study and describe the waves and how to produce them. Applied science tries to find a useful purpose for the microwaves such as radar or signal transmission or microwave oven design. The alcohol in all beverages is the same and can be produced from the sugars of many fruits. Using pineapple would likely impart a particular flavor. Pineapple flavor can also be added to (grain) alcohol to make a beverage because other sugars may be easier to collect or ferment.

When a theoretical scientific concept is used in real life to create something useful for us it becomes a applied scientific concept. But this concept will continue to evolve from it's application's point of view. For example, computer science in its pure form is all formal mathematics. But when applied to write software programs it is applied science. Study of behaviour of electron becomes Electronic equipments when applied. I hope this helps.
