As someone who is actually alive does that not mean I have a life. Although it may not be as interesting or exciting as most peoples, my life is what I can financially afford it to be. Lets face it most things cost money - entertaining at home, going out, leisure activities, holidays. See where I'm going with this. I'm sure there's a lot of people who stay at home in the evening, somethimes would rather be out.

I always think it's said by uncaring individuals who refuse to listen to someone's problems. People who for some reason look down their nose at your lifestyle and think they're somehow better...
It's a nasty phrase which suggests that your life is detestable in their opinion (which may or may not be correct).

I take no notice of anyone who uses it, as it means they don't care. It shows a lack of compassion and is very ignorant. It's a verbal disease of selfsatisfying haughtyness.

Some of us don't equate going out in the evening as "having a life". I have a fabulous life for example, I go to University and I have to bring up children on my own, so I cannot go out much after dark without relinquishing parental responsibility. If this means I don't "have a life" by someone else's "standards" I disagree. I'm sure there are people who can't go out because of longterm illness, or agoraphobia - some people just don't want to - should they just "get a life"??
I've heard the phrase before, but the only person who ever said it to me was a druggie mother who often went out on the piss (and God knows what else) in the evenings.
I think therefore it says a lot about the person who says it.... :-)

important is not where a phrase has come from, but what is the philosophy it beholds.

“get a life” is to be happy with what opportunities are there for ya. it is to forget and to forgive. it is to be positive at every stage of life, as everything that happens, happens for a good reason. there is at least sth in every happening that makes it meant to happen to ya. always see a glass half full, not half empty. it is really important and at the same time difficult enough to have a positive view about everything. however it is also the key element to a successful life and to "get a life". To live happy, you dont need to have every luxury others have; while you can find your happiness at every tiny things you own, with the happiness of your parents, your siblings and your friends, their love for ya and their cares.

Get a life I think it's invented in the 20th century, in the 50es.
Where you should have socialized more often after the big war of our grandparents.
About my life is what I can financially afford it to be, no no no, I can not agree with that.
You can do a lot of great things without money, you only have to be creative.

It normally means get over your whining and pity party and get a life, along with staying out of mine. It doesn't have to mean all the dining and leisure. Where it came from? I don't know, but I have hard it for as long as I can recall getting a life.

To be honest, I'm thinking that whoever said "get a life" is wishing he or she had trademarked it, at least... Maybe they could get money out of it! Still, the saying doesn't really mean money, as it stands. What it really means is getting out and meeting new people, seeing things/places/events you haven't seen before, and learning new things. You don't really need money for that, you just need motivation. Think of going out to play as a reason to better yourself, and work from that.

I think it means stop focussing all your apparent attention on irrelevant petty things or moaning about your lot and do something about it or stop being so sad (in your attitude). Generally an attitude change is being 'suggested' rather than throwing money at the problem hoping for a solution.

It usually means "get a social life". It's said in many online games where the biggest players have almost no social life, and the proud they have in the game can get on the nerves of others, others who have their proud in their own life, not in the life of their characters..

It is used for people who can't help sticking their noses into other people's business. Meaning that if they had a life of their own, they wouldn't have to interfere with other people's lives.
