“Writing, I think, is not apart from living. Writing is a kind of double living The writer experiences everything twice. Once in reality and once in that mirror which waits always before or behind.” Catherine Drinker.

In my opinion is kinda like this: " We need a witness to our lives. There's a billion people on the planet... I mean, what does any one life really mean? But in a marriage, you're promising to care about everything. The good things, the bad things, the terrible things, the mundane things... all of it, all of the time, every day. You're saying 'Your life will not go unnoticed because I will notice it. Your life will not go un-witnessed because I will be your witness'." Beverly Clark, "Shall We Dance".

it is a strange human thing to do

i go into a large bookstore and look at the millions of books and wonder exacty what you asked

i dont have an answer - maybe we have nothing better to do..

( i myself, sometimes, write poetry, screenplays and short stories, don't really know why i do it )

it might be a question about art - why do we make art?

It's a talent, everyone has different God given talents. I make up stories all the time and my friends and family are dissapointed when I don't tell them a new one.

I also write for a living, but my friends seem to like my stories, I can see their spirits pick up when we have been talking and I realize what they really want is to hear a story and I begin to tell one.

Sometimes it is to get something off your chest and put it into words, whether what is in our head comes from creative inspiration, or pain. I know that Bridge to Terabithia was written for the author's young son, who had just experienced the loss of his best friend. She wrote it as a means of "getting through" the pain. Sometimes we are just inspired by something and want to throw it on paper to share with others. But most importantly, I think part of it is because we know that if we can write something down (especially something great) it can outlive us- and partially keep our memory alive. Make sense?

I think the good ones are written because the writer has a story to tell. Pure and simple. Some stories are cranked out for the sake of money, but most of those aren't very good.

They have something to say?

Everyone, whether we are outwardly successful or productive...is responding to some fire within. For authors it is writing. For singers, it is music. For athletes, it is their game. For teachers, it is teaching. For those of us who still don't have a clue and are still schlepping around a little spark...our passion is keeping the spark alive and trying to make it grow into something we recognize.

Everyone does whatever they are doing, even if it is mindless and boring, to satisfy some very deep desire.

And then there is...doing whatever because you love the money. In which case THAT is your desire and you have it all backwards...but there are also reasons why it is important to chase money sometimes...feeding your family for example.

I guess everyone will say it's Money. But writing is a gift so I would say that writers have a need to share their imaginations or their experiences with the world. God Bless 'Um.

People are born with certain propensities. Some people are natural athletes and excel in sports, for example, others love math, and for some, it's writing.
