The perineum may tear slightly during birth, or the doctor may perform an episiotomy, in which the perineum is cut to "prevent" the tear. In either case, stitches are used to repair the tissue. As far as the vagina returning to it's original size, if you have a large baby, or have had many babies, the vagina will certainly be larger. You can do Kegel exercises to strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, which will help with both urinary incontinence and the "size" of your vagina. Be sure to do them properly - if you're tightening the wrong muscles, it won't do any good. Try stopping the stream of urine when you go to the bathroom. That's the movement you need to do to exercise the correct muscles. You can also do Kegel exercises before childbirth to help prevent tearing of the perineum.

I'm going to go off on a tangent here, because the subject of routine episiotomies just drives me nuts. The commonly held belief, even now among many doctors, is that a cut heals better than a tear. Science has discovered that in fact, an episiotomy is more likely to cause further tearing and leads to greater infection than allowing the tissue to tear. They have found absolutely no medical benefit for a routine episiotomy, and yet many doctors still cut.

One of the reasons originally given for performing episiotomies, in the 1920's, was that it prevented pelvic floor relaxation, which supposedly prevented urinary incontinence and made sex less pleasurable. First, how does cutting a muscle and then sewing it back together make it stronger? Second, episiotomies are performed just before the baby is delivered, so the pelvic floor was already as relaxed as it was going to get. Third, there was no evidence that incontinence was affected by episiotomies - in fact, most women who had episiotomies DID have urinary incontinence. And finally, the less pleasurable sex was about the man's pleasure, not the woman's. Shouldn't any medical procedure be about the patient, not the patient's spouse? And what about that extra stitch - the "husband's knot?" It can lead to discomfort and even pain for women during sex forever afterward.

So why do so many doctors in the US still insist on performing routine episiotomies? Maybe it's because an episiotomy is a surgical procedure, which has greater "value" in western medicine than normal, non-surgical childbirth. Some suggest it's because most doctors in the US are male, and episiotomies allow them to control the "powerfully sexual, creative, and male-threatening aspects of women." It certainly explains the emphasis on restoring "virginal conditions." Do I agree completely with this statement? Of course not. Do I think it's true in some cases? Absolutely. Despite the romanticized view of all doctors "doing no harm" and wanting what's best for their patients, I've encountered too many who are self involved, controlling, impatient, and dismissive of their patients' concerns.

You only get stitches if you have a tear or an episiotomy cut !! Many women are able to stretch and do not need stitches My darling your whole body isn't the same as before you were pregnant so why should your vagina miss the experience !! That will be your new normal !!
What can be done ???? Some obstetricians when repairing tears or cuts put an extra stitch in "for Dad" to make the exterior opening a little tighter ???
Astringent herbs in your bathwater ???Plenty of foreplay means you're plumped up and ready ! Also don't forget your pelvic floor exercises Important !!!
Don't forget any rude comments about the size of your vagina( large) reflects badly on the size of the penie(small)!!

Some women have an episiotomy, The Vagina is cut by the Dr. to keep the peri area from tearing. It is easier to heal from an incision the dr makes than ripping. Yes the vagina does go back to the original size! The vagina streches during birth, but shortly after it returns to normal size.

I have had 5 kids..............only one episiotomy. Dr's now a days don't regularly do the cut like they did back in the day. I wouldn't say the vagina goes completely back to it's old size but my husband says it is pretty much the same as before the babys.

I had alot of stitches after each of my three births. It takes awhile for things to start looking close to normal. But, you never go back to the way you exactly were.
