Seems like every single person in town goes to "the mall" every weekend. I realize "the mall" is a comprehensive shopping experience, but I've come to the conclusion that I'm either more broke than everyone else, hate shopping more than most people, or I just don't need as much "stuff" as everyone else. What is everyone buying? The mall is starting to look like the Christmas rush/season every single weekend of the year.

It just amazes me that so many people need to buy so much stuff every Saturday and Sunday. I only brave the mall crowds (the mall traffic is worse) when it's a last resort or it's my only reasonable shopping decision.

I mean, really, why is there a huge department-type store dedicated solely to bed linens and bath towels?

I guess I'm just a cheap-skate grumpy shopper and I hate long lines and traffic jams even worse.

There are just so many other more exciting, better things to do on weekends besides shop.

First of all, some people - especially teenagers - go to the mall just to hang out. They are there for the social experience rather than to shop.

Secondly, get a little perspective. I think most malls are in cities with populations of at least 200,000 within a 30 minute driving radius. How many people can realistically be at the mall at any given time? 1000, 1500, 2000? Even if it's close to 3000 people it would only equal about 1.5% of the population served by that mall. That's a long way from everybody.

Finally, common sense would tell you why so many people are there on the weekend. I mean why are you there on the weekend. I bet it has something to do with working during the week. If it really bothers you, just stay home next time so there will be one less person at the mall.

Stuff is probably cheaper OUTSIDE of the mall. The mall stores pay really high rent prices, so the merchandise is going to be that much more expensive.

I live in a very large city that has many large malls. I have not gone to a mall to shop, however, in a few years. I don't like the traffic and I don't like the prices.

Where do you live? Are there any shopping center strips? I buy clothes at different thrift stores around town... or Wal-Mart or Target... Ace Hardware stores have more than hardware.. I just go to an independent store that sells what I need.

I don't miss the mall. I'll probably never shop in a mall again... unless I am traveling and visiting someone, and then go to the mall with that someone.

Thing is, if you want to buy one item you'll go to at least 3 shops to see where the best price is. So a mall is good - similar shops tend to set up next to each other.
There's about 15 independent parties in each shop at any time. In a mall with 50 shops, that could mean anything around 750 parties in there. With 4 people in a car, that becomes 3000 people.
Now you know!

Because we all have to be somewhere, and we all dislike crowds. But in the same breath we'd all like to be somewhere else than in work on a weekend, and if you have the money it is always good to go the 'mall'.

The real problem is that we have too many people in the world, and the crowded mall is just a symptom of a crowded planet. I guess one answer would be to build another mall. But like more roads encourages more motorists, more malls would inevitably generate more mall-rats.

I am the same way. I absolutely hate going to malls. I hate shopping in general except when it's for cool things like DVDs, music or video games. Even so, I feel no need to go every week. I'll go like every 2 months or something like that. I don't understand why people are so obsessed about buying things. My clothes are going to last me a really long time because my mom always buys me expensive clothes, which I never wear. I think it'd be much wiser to save your money for times when you really need the money... I plan on going to graduate school, so I'm saving every cent I can earn.

Because most stinkin employers pay on Fridays, which insures long stinkin Friday lines at the stinkin banks, grocery stores and malls on weekends, that is just a stinkin part of it.

People go to malls to hang out, because its cool, because they don't necessarily want to shop, but want to check out the latest merchandise. It's more about getting out of the house.

The rest of teh crowd are there to shop. You'll be surprised about how many people go there, not wanting to buy anything.
