Because her family was too poor to have a regular pet for her. The wool was sold to help put some much needed jack in the family fundage and then the lamb was slaughtered to give them eats for awhile.
Of course Mary wasn't thrilled with that outcome, I know that.

her family sheer the sheep for income (that's why it's fleece was white as snow) they also eat mutton when times get hard..........a cat or dog would hardly feed an entire family.
