Because some people's sense of self-worth is tied up in their level which, as we all know, is determined by their points. Losing even 5 is unacceptable to these people. Every point counts. Even if you have to answer a question about what your pets favorite ice cream is to get a couple more.
I heard you can trade them in for a free sandwich at Arby's. So, I guess the points mean "crap" in one way.

Probably because some people do think these points are of some value. I don't really, I just like to come here and answer questions. Yes, I have some points, but it is just like a score for me, that is how I look at it. =)

Yeah! I have asked this Q a few times. I always tell them they just wasted a potential 10 points, because they're not getting Best Answer for saying something so dull and cliched!
