It would be even better if the victim of the crime was given the chance to birch the person who commited the crime against them.. I would rally enjoy birching someone who had maybe mugged me and stole my mobile phone and wallet. I think it would make them think again before ever doing that to somone else. Crime figures would come right down and the streets would be a safer place to walk.

I don't know if you've ntoiced but the places where crime figures are lower and youngsters less likely to get into trouble are those with an intact community. There children grow up with a greater sense of belonging and are far less likely to commit crime as a result.

Where crime rates are highest is usually where the community has broken down e.g. through economic pressure or degeneration and you are not going to repair that damage by whacking wrongdoers.

The most effective form of punishment is to make young people who have committed crimes (e.g. vandalism, muggings) put right the damage they have done.

In the USA in the poor quarter of LA there was a spate of trees being damaged and uprooted by young hooligans, so some community workers put together a scheme where the youngsters were put to work planting the trees. When they saw how much work it took to plant a tree they left them alone.

On a personal note, I was subjected to corporal punishment at school (often for very trivial reasons - speaking out of turn, minor scuffles with classmates) and did not respect the teachers as a result, in fact I despised them and still do.

I am afraid that some would enjoy birching people, and others would refuse to do it. Those who do it for a living are probably sadists hiding behind the law.

Chances are that you would be targeted by whoever you had birched. If it has to be done, the state should do it, if only in the interests of consistency. Some people would hit a lot harder than others, and anyway, it smacks of vigilantism.

Don't get me wrong, I am not a softy. Maybe the parents should be birched as well.

Our justice system works to identify young offenders and reform them. It used to be that people were punished, in Victorian times, but the rate of reoffenders was too high; hitting young people only encourages them to hate the authorities.

It is also very likely to encourage people to be violent, since for them, they will see that violence is acceptable (since the authorities do it) - this may worsen the situation.

Most people would enjoy it - I agree! - but revenge in our justice system has no place, since it is very personal, and would mean that not everyone is treated equally under the law - punishment would depend on how harsh the victim of the crime was.

Its tempting to think this, but if you hit young offenders, what moral high ground do you have? This is why we are a civilised nation.

I was caned over and over in the '70s and slippered in the infant school. Do you know what, all it did was make me hate the teacher. It didnt stop me being a dsiruptive little bastard! Apparently I was bored coz I was the eldest of 40 kids. No, find the kids something they enjoy doing and focus on that.
I was a cop for 11 years from the age of 19 and I reckon catching the villains and locking 'em up - 3 strikes & out, U.S. style - is a better deterrent. Dont get me wrong I enjoyed battering their doors down and dragging their asses to the station, but you have to ask are we being civilised when we use violence ourselves?!

I totally agree, I do believe people literally get away with murder these days. Is it in Dubai where if you steal something you lose a hand?
you dont need to be a rocket scientist to work out why there is virtually no crime there.
yes I do believe in an eye for an eye.
