My brother has a huge hardy vine growing in his garden in North London, he gave me dried up sticks which he promises me will grow here on the coast in Wales - is it just a matter of sticking 'em in a pot or wot?

If the cutting is brown and dried out, nothing will bring it back to life.

If it's been recently cut, try wetting the tip, sticking the mosit end in rooting hormone (found at your local nursery) and then sticking it in a most pot filled with good soil. For a little better luck, try putting the entire pot - plant and all in a clear plastic bag, fastened at the top to keep moisture in. After about two weeks, you should see signs of life (small leaf buds).

After this happens, take the plastic cover off and let the plant get used to its 'bag free' life.

Once that is done, then find a suitable location in your yard and transplant away. Keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best.

Good luck.

i have grown grape vines from broken off shoots without any additional hormone powder - i just placed them in water until they were sturdy enough to plant out...
when you buy them to plant out they often look as if they are past any chance of survival .... the best way to ensure they keep the sap is to break off at a strong joint and wax them until the best time to grow on....
