The battery for the E46 3-series (1999-2005) is located in the trunk. For LHD cars, it is located on the passenger side of the trunk under a plastic panel. For RHD cars, it would be on the driver's side.
If you plan to disconnect the battery, always remember to disconnect the ground terminal first.

Reference your owners manual. Normally the battery is in the trunk on the right side under a plastic panel.

You can find the battery in the right side of your boot under the black cover besides the spare wheel.
