The use of Silver nitrate requires a slightly acidic solution and generally gives a silver-plate which then requires buffing.

Potassium Silver Cyanide solutions are usually slightly basic and allow control of the Silver plate as to bright, matt or dull and seldom need hand buffing.

Check out the Silver nitrate solution in the second site if you want to try electroplating at home without the cyanide.

Off the top of my head, I would suggest that the other product of the electrolysis (nitric acid) might not be the best chemical in which to suspend the object being plated. I would pick something more friendly as the anion.

And for good measure - here is my blog: nerds-central.blogspot.com
