because...4 is 1 negative from five and it is 2 digits positive from 2.
8 is 3 positive from five and 6 positive from 2.

Case 1
Let unknown number, x , lie outwith the region between 2 and 5:-
x - 2 = 2(x - 5)
x - 2 = 2x - 10
2x - 10 = x - 2
x = 10 - 2
x = 8

Case 2
Let unknown number lie within the region containing 2 and 5:-
x - 2 = 2(5 - x)
x - 2 = 10 - 2x
3x = 12
x = 4

The numbers are 4 and 8.
