The folks in the hat making trade in Olde England used mercury for "felting" hat materials. It affected their brains, giving rise to the phrase "Mad as a Hatter" and the character of the Mad Hatter in Alice. We've known about that effect since Dickens' time, I think.

it was discovered when they found dead whales with mercury in their fat.

then some clever scientist related mercury with dead and so the discovery was made.

mercury = neurotoxin...not sure when it was discovered, probably around the mid-late eighties....
