PCI express is a special slot for newer expansion slots, they provide faster bus speeds then standard PCI or AGP slots. The x1 means that your motherboard has one PCI-E slot.

The first three links explain the three types of expansion ports PCIe, PCI, and AGP and their capabilities, while the last one gives a comparison of seven different PCIe graphics cards.
