family planning has been active in africa since the early 1980's. World Bank, U.N and many NGOs have been battling to lower the population growth of the poorest african coutries. Ironically, the most succesful efforts are in the better off countries such as South Africa, Egypt, Morocco.
Ethiopia has a tradition of early marriage. Women marry around age 16 and begin to have children around age 18. Family size averages about six children. Only 6 percent of women use modern contraceptive methods, although, according to 2000 DHS data, 32 percent of women of childbearing age do not want to have any more children and 36 percent wish to delay the next birth by two years or more.Ethiopia
