Check your points dwell. Check the plugs, timing, look for vacuum leaks, if all this checks out, it may time to look at the carburetor

I would start with having a garage do a compression test of all six cylinders. Due to the year, it could have a stuck or inoperative valve/pushrod/lifter. The sure sign if it is valve related is, does it backfire more as you increase the RPM's (step on the throttle)? The slant six plymouth engine was odd looking but very tough. If compression checks out good, then look at ignition timing, points, and if the vacuum advance is working. Good luck.

It may just need a valve adjustment being solid lifters. Could have a valve hanging open due to never getting adjusted.

1790? Wow, that's old. I'd strap on a feed bag and let it rest overnight in the barn.
