Hi, 2 questions

1- Where exactly is the goalie in a hockey game allowed to hold “freeze” the puck? Is in only in the crease area?

2- How about moving the puck with his/her stick? Is the goalie restricted in certain areas in that matter?

Thanx

ok, the first one you have to be near the crease. sometimes goalies like to come out a little to challenge the player, but you can't be all the way near the boards, just the perimeter of the crease, the second one yes. in the back of the net there is a trapeziod. the goalies can't play the puck outside of the trapezoid behind the goal line. but the can play it where ever thay want in their defnsive zone or neutral zone in front of the goal line. goalies only come that far out of the crease usually during a power play, or if there heading to the bench(being pulled to get an extra man) and they accidently get near the puck, ryan miller of the buffalo sabres once did that

1. Goalies can only freeze the puck in the crease area or very close perimeter and while an opposing player is near. If no opposing player is near they can get called for delay of game or the ref will tell them to play the puck.

2. They can play the puck anywhere in the defensive zone in front of the goal line. Behind the goal line they are restricted to the trapezoid which doesn't mean much because the puck usually makes its way there anyway. As far as leaving the crease to play the puck they can't get passed their blue line otherwise it's an automatic penalty for leaving the crease (just like the BUF-OTT game where the goalies got in the brawl).

No he can freeze the puck outside of the crease but in either instance an opposing player must be near the puck or he will get a delay of game call and goalies cannot carry the puck behind the net in the trapezoid or past the Center Ice red line

They just made a rule that the goalie can only play the puck in front of the "goal line" running from side board to side board, and in a "trapezoid" are behind the net running diagonally to the "corners" of the rear boards.

As for freezing the puck, i believe its either the places listed above, the goalies semi-circle, or possibly anywhere his side of the blue line.. The second part im not sure of.

Just to add to John's answer. Technically, a goalie is not allowed to freeze the puck behind the goal line but referees rarely call this.

Kinda hard to score five-hole that way isn't it? Unless it's a knee skirt.
