Part of the regs is that walls on the corridor (escape route) must give 30 mins escape for fire (take 30 mins before they burn). Do new walls have to be built or do they need to be lined. If so with what and is this very expensive?

The building regs do state this under control of fire spread B2/3/4 or part D7E in Scotland. The type of finish and board thickness as well as type of board is governed by the build, ie. is it timber framed, a block of flats, direct bond etc.
As stated by others 12.5 mm is the base line but it needs to be Pink coloured Fire Lined plaster board for escape routes, and you cover all bases at 15mm thickness. If flats and timber framed then this doubles as you need to double board each side with vapor barrier.

if its plasterboarded then it must be 12.5mm thick with a plaster skim. You could screw plasterboard straight onto the wall, picking up the timber studs (assuming its a lathe +plaster wall) then skim it, The only real expense is getting a plasterer. Doing this as apposed to building new walls would save a lot of time, work and mess!

if the plasterboard is 12,5 thick then that is what is needed to give you 30 mins fire protection..it must be skimmed

all brick and block built walls are fire proof to a certain time period, after a building has caught fire, you will usually see the walls are left standing.
