I haven't much experience with macs, something tells me that it's just the right purchase to make...why should i wait for leopard to come out, if i don't wait will it be difficult (or worth it) to upgrade? I heard that there are usually sales on macs during "back to school" time is this true? i'm a student so i already get a small discount, if there is a back to school sale will the savings be that much more. Please feel free to give any opinions....not having mac experience makes me eager to hear others thoughts....THANKS

OK, first off, you go to the apple store, and play with it. Play with the displays as much as possible, until you are satisfied with it. The thing with macs is, if they do launch a new OS within a certain time after you buy your mac, they will give you a free upgrade. Ask the apple-store-guy about this. IIRC, it's 90 days, but don't count my word on it, ask the guy.

However, if you did miss the deadline, it is not painful at all to upgrade. What you need to do is just pop the disc in, and click archive and install. Or Upgrade, whichever one you want. Basically, archive and install will archive your old system, and install a fresh one. Your old preferences will be moved to the archive. Upgrade, on the other hand, will preserve your old preferences. And after that, you're done. Nothing more to do.

As far as back to school sale goes, they're usually for combos and such, like "if you buy a laptop and an iPod, we'll give you such and such free" or some such like that. If you do need an iPod, might be a good buy, otherwise, eh...

Do not waste your money on a Mac notebook, I cannot stress this enough. Notebooks are in and of themselves a one-time investment, with little wiggle room for upgrading and the like. Mac books take this to an entire new level; you cannot put any hardware into a macbook that is not made my macintosh. Most software you put into a macbook is also developed by Macintosh.

OS/X and Leopard are no better than windows when it comes to freak errors and quirky features. If you buy a PC laptop, you can throw linux on it if you don't want Windows, but atleast you'll have the option.

wait for the upgrade so that you dont have to pay for leopard..

leopard is going to be a 64-bit OS.

If you dont mind paying whatever apple charges to do a major version upgrade, then buy now..
not like they are going to change up Hardware anytime soon..

I've been using Unix forever, and after my last PC died I said "F' IT" lets go bu a macbook pro. Wish i'd done it a lot sooner..
OS X is the best of both worlds I like *unix OS w/ a pretty gui*

anyway have fun..you wont be disappointed w/ your MAC.
