Yes, you can join for free and hang out in SL without using any real money. However, once you're a member, you'll discover there are so many neat things to 'buy' such as clothing, hair styles, accessories, etc. that you'll soon be wanting some Linden dollars. There are ways to earn Linden dollars though, so don't hesitate to join. It's a great place!

Yes. You can download a client and make an account for free. Paid subscribers get a stipend of Linden $ and some other perks. But you can not spend any real money and be really poor online.

Yes, you can setup the account for free and once inside, you can get Lindens (the SL currency) in a variety of ways. You can Camp for it, pick it from money trees, Gamble, or get an SL job.
