I recommend playing through some highly scalar, simple melodies in every key just to get your hands used to the patterns you'll be using later on (such as twinkle twinkle little star, My country 'tis of the, etc.). Also, go to any music store and find a couple guitar/piano books from Hal Leonard. They have simple chord arrangements for all your favorite songs and bands. This is a quick and fun way to learn your chord positions (very important) and play music you like at the same time.
