Earth is NOT going to explode. It will probably continue as a planet (..with or without life..) for at least another 4-billion years. At that time our sun will expand into a red-giant stage and probably engulf our planet.

If the Sun expands large enough, it will engulf the Earth and then the Earth will melt away.

If the Sun goes nova (too small for a supernova or a black hole) then any planet still orbiting that will be blown apart - including the Earth.

Two possibilities exist but exact dates are not possible to determine:

1. When mankind develops the ultimate planet killing weapon and then uses it.

2. When the sun eventually enters the red giant stage and engulfs the earth with its expansion to this stage.

It is imminent. When the sun runs out of gas, it will expand and heat the earth to ridiculous temperatures. When it finally runs out, it will cool down too quickly and like ice, the earth will then explode.
