St. Mary's Church is the first Anglican Church in Chennai, located in the premises St. George Fort. St. Mary's Church was built in 1678-80 and it is also the oldest surviving British Church in India. St. Mary's Church is often described as the Westminster Abbey of the East.
During the tenure of Governor Streynsham excavations for the Church building began and its construction was completed in 1679. The Church was christened St. Mary's as its foundation was laid on the Annunciation day of the Virgin Mary (the feast observed by Christians to mark the day when Mary was told of God's plan that she would be Mother of Jesus).
St. Mary's Church was built largely from personal donations. The original building was about 60ft. by 90ft. Its outer walls were 4ft thick and its roof 2ft. thick and bomb proof. The original structure of the building, which William Dixon built and Edward Fowle embellished, was in rectangular shape made with brick and polished in lime, with a bomb proof, curved roof.

St. Mary's Church is the oldest Anglican Church in India. Built over 2 years, it was consecrated on Lady's Day on 28/12/1680. It remains till date much the same, except for the renovated spire and the tower.
The foundation stone in the Fort was laid on Lady's Day, 1678 and Streynsham Master, the Governor of Fort St. George, got the St. Mary's Church designed and built by Edward Fowle, the Master Gunner of the Fort.
In those days the gunners were also engineers.
The Church records and registers date from the consecration in 1680 and form a complete record of the Church with the exception of 3 years 1746-49, the period when Madras was in possession of the French. The first marriage entry is that of Elihu Yale, after whom the Yale University of America is named, to Catherine Himmers on 4/11/1680. Another famous marriage that took place here is that of the famous Robert Clive with Margaret Maskelyne, on 18/2/1753.
