Were they the Malabar caves? I recall something close to that but when I write it down, it doesn't seem quite the exact spelling. Maybe I'm just too tired at 4 in the morning and should go to bed.

Yes, I was right and the spellling was right. I Googled it — my copy of A Passage to India is downstairs in the basement and it's too late to go up and down two fligts of steps to verify this.
