Rather amusingly the first international cricket match wasn't the precursor to The Ashes (Australia v. England) in 1877, but a match between Canada and the USA in 1844!

My belief is as follows:
- Cricket was a middle to upper class sport in England, and was often used as a metaphor for "ye olde England" and traditional values. North Americans, as a whole were trying to shun these very things.
- Most, although not all, of the emigrants to North America from England were from the middle to lower classes, seeking new opportunities in life ... and cricket wasn't a sport they played or were involved in as much.
- A large proportion of North American immigrants were also from non-English countries, making it even more foreign to them as a past time.
- Basketball and baseball (although surprisingly not football/soccer) were more accessible and non-English pursuits, that they could embrace as their own.
- Fast forward to modern times, and cricket has become so incredibly foreign to North Americans that they simply can't fathom the intricacies of a sport that can last five whole days with hundreds of runs scored and no definitive result.
- It's quite a difficult sport to understand, in terms of the subtelties, unless you've grown up with it. I've also found this in the UK, in trying to help them understand Australian Rules football - which is another sporting culture that I think you need to have born into.

I've spent a lot of time in the US, and attended sporting matches there (grid iron, baseball, basketball, ice hockey), and the subject of cricket has often come up. When I try to explain it in very broad and simple terms, they refuse to allow themselves the fantasy of putting aside the amount of time a cricket match takes to play (even a one day match) and I think that alone will prevent it from ever being popular in a culture so demanding of people's valuable time - ignoring the need to also understand the complicated rules.

America doesn't even like the worlds most popular sports...so why would they like cricket.

Because here in America we play an equally boring sport called 'Baseball'. We enjoy playing it as kids and watching it as we grow older but sometimes it can be very boring. To stop this boredom American baseball teams offer a variety of refreshments such as beer, hot dogs, and popcorn.

Cricket cannot compete with baseball because it is somewhat similar and it doesn't have the 130+ year tradition that baseball has.
