He went to England and hung around with Ezra Pound. Note that he didn't need Pound or any other poet to become a good poet — i.e., we're not talking about the origin of his creative originality. But hanging around wiht the advanced imagist poiets led to hius being talked about in avant garde poetic circles and when he returned to the U.S. he was marked as an up-and-coming poetic succcess.

It sounds like you might not find his poems very well written. Many people do, however, so I think that got him a lot of good publicity.
