Copper has this smell (sort of the iron smell, I am not sure how to describe it), even if it does not come into contact with skin. I don't think copper can rust, because rust is iron plus oxygen. There was this one time when we worked with those thick copper wires in out T.H.E. class and after long exposure to air (we remove the insulator to bend), it sort of was prone to breaking (making it hard to bend). I am not sure if there's a connection.

The metal is probably reacting to the moisture on your skin; what you're smelling might be oxidation.

And for the idiot girl who mentioned it, copper doesn't rust; iron rusts. Copper oxidizes. *rolls eyes*

Perhaps you have an allergy to copper. Zinc allergies are common also the backs of watches can discolor skin or irritate it. My advice would be to clean it and clear coat it with ether clear paint or nail polish.
