This poor person was 14 in 1981, back in the day when you were not a teenager until 14 at the earliest (as opposed to today, where 7-year-olds can be teenagers).

Therefore get them an 80s CD! As they were 13-22 in the eighties, love it or loathe it it will bring back memories!

You're asking a question here but really it's about you. What best illustrates your 40 years? What are the songs that have touched you the most? You've got this opportunity to grab everyone you care about all at the same moment, burn off a CD of what you consider to be the best songs ever and give it out, then when anyone asks about any of the songs you can direct them to the album the song they like is from. Doddle man and you will love it.

One thing I've done for friends with 40th birthdays is compile the Top 20 from the week they were born. My other half has a book which lists all these. Thanks to his own capacious record collection, and P2P file sharing systems, this hasn't proved difficult. Add to that maybe some songs with their name in, or songs about aspects of them; CD cover with some pics of them from the past, and you have a unique gift.

What about picking 40 songs - one from each of the 40 years from their birth to now. You could either go with the Number 1 song on their birthday each year, or possibly pick a song from the year which you think they'll enjoy, (gives much more choice and easier to find something they'd like that way). If you did it as a vcd or a dvd instead of a cd, you could combine the songs with images from events that happened in that year, either personal events for the person - so using photos of them as they grew up, or events that happened in the world that year to show how much things have changed - for example first moon walk, first test tube baby born etc.

Anyone who's 40 was a teenager in the 80's. So i would say beat it, Were not gonna take it, Shout, I ran, What you need, Endless summer nights, Faith, Straight up, into the night, Another one bites the dust. .. A song from each year of the 80's

How well do you know the person? If you have access to the person's vinyl collection, you could try to secretly arrange to get the songs transferred onto an Ipod or onto some form of digital media so that they can play the songs on the move.
