Kolkata is one of the beautiful cities in the world. It is the capital of the West Bengal state. People speak Bengali here. They can understand Hindi well though. Bengali's are innocent at heart and outspoken. Kolkata is famous for Rasagullas and Gulab Jamuns. The famous Rasagulla is made up of pure milk only here. Else where it is not made so pure. The hanging bridge of Howrah in Kolkata (Gallery) is one and the only in India and looks very gigantic. It looks similar to London Bridge. Kolkata can boast of one of the oldest transportation of the world i.e., The Tram-way.
The Bengalis food habits are totally different from other Indians. People rely on fish as their staple food. Even Rasagullahs can fill up their entire lunch. People also eat egg role, veg role, veg chomin, aloo chat, pani poori, bhel poori, masala poori, jalmuri, sweet dahi and much more.
The climate of Kolkata varies from season to season. Thus summer, winter, autumn and spring occur in a single year. The summer is extremely hot. The winter starts with a heavy rainfall filling the roads with atleast two to three feet by water. The winter season terminates with heavy cold such that one cannot resist the cold without socks, gloves and sweaters. The spring season falls on the month of September and wherever you see you can find greenery. The autumn season again brings out the heat gradually.
The Durga Pooja is celebrated very rich in Kolkata. Generally Bengalis are pious towards Holy Mother Kali. The Kalighat temple and the Dhakshineshwar temple stand as a proof for this. Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa worshipped Mother Kali. Kolkata is totally different from all the other places of India.
There are lots of traveling means such as trams, Metro trains (underground), Jatka(horse ride), Hand rickshaw, taxi, auto, etc., Tram goes very slow. People can catch the tram by walk itself. That much slow it goes. Quite contrary to tram, Metro trains goes very fast. I bet no other transport is faster than Metro (other than airways) in India. The tram just moves slowly in the road itself. It is very beautiful to watch. If you want to sight-see the entire city, you can take a tram. It is also cheap. Metro Trains have automatic opening and closing doors. They are completely air-conditioned. Once you go inside Metro, it would resemble like a foreign train. The doors of the Metro will open and immediately all must get entered. Within a stipulated time, the doors will be closed. A tape-recorder will announce the names of the next station. Since there is lots of transportation available, the crowds are evenly distributed.
There are also a couple of south Indian hotels such as Premavilas, Komalavilas and some more. Generally north Indians are crazy to eat itlies and dosas along with sambar and chutney. Hindustani Music and Rabindra Shanghit are very famous there. There is one Lake Garden where toy trains run around the lake. It is specially designed for children. Boating is available in the lake. Near the lake there is Menaka theatre. It plays nice Bengali and Hindi films.
Generally people will long to go to hill stations but I would suggest all Indians & Foreigners who come to India to visit Kolkata along with hill stations and other tourist spots. Definitely Kolkata stands out odd.
