My car was running fine. One day I drove it (there was no trouble starting it), went to drive it back home a few hours later and it wouldn't start. All of the lights, windows, radio, wipers, everything worked. It was really cold out and I didn't have hardly any gas. After trying to get it to start for about ten minutes, it finally started. I went straight to the gas station and filled up, thinking that may have been the problem. It worked fine for another couple of days and the same thing happened. I played that game for a week or two, with sometimes it starting and sometimes it not. Well, now it won't start it all, no matter how long I mess with it or what I do. It doesn't make any weird noises, no clicking, no grinding, nothing. I doubt it's the battery or the alternator or the starter... but then again, I don't know anything about cars. Any ideas of what it could be? Does it sound electrical? Is there something I should try at home before taking it in?

I have a 1999 Alero. Last year my warning lights would come on for no apparent reason. My ABS, airbag, low traction, and battery lights came on for months but without any reason. Then one day all the lights came on, and my car died. It was my alternator. The mechanic said that GM cars have a reputation for having bad alternators.

I believe you need a tune up. Since u mentioned the day is cold, many cars can't start because the spark plug is too cold to produce energy to spark up the engine. Some car co. comes with cheap spark plug, it get wear out after 4 or 5 yrs. Buy a spark plug made with platnum or iridum, they last a lot longer. Same thing happened to my boss lady's 97 BMW and my friend's 95 Mitsu eclipse.

The culprit is probably the FUEL PUMP. Since you like to ride low on gas that puts extra pressure on the pump. I remember on my car I played the same game with it for a couple weeks and it went bad, and now I never ride low on gas ever. FUEL PUMPS are costly, the part alone will be from 100 used to around 300 new plus labor.

go to your local mechanic and have them check the alternator...then the starter, and next the battery.

your alternator charges the battery and the battery runs all the computers in your car....in a typical car there are at least three different computers and they all need the proper voltages to run the car and manage its systems. they all tie together and need to all be working properly....

good luck

If you canhear the your car trying to start (normal starting sound) you could have a problem with, spark plugs, or maybe little fuel is getting to the engine or none at all (fuel pump)
