First of all, read the book, it's one of the best ever written in the "American" language...

To carry on the Simon and Garfunkel theme, one of their lesser-known tracks called "The Only Living Boy in New York" would work I think. There's also a beautiful cover version by Everything But The Girl, and not to sound too pretentious but I think the female vocal would add another layer.

As to something you might actually be able to get your hands on, I'd probably be tempted to go the ironic Quentin Tarantino-type line and use something completely crass and "inappropriate". For some reason S&G come to mind again, a "cute" little ditty like "Feelin' Groovy". But it's really more a fifties than sixties sound you want - "Yakety Yak" would make me laugh - ooh, you HAVE to read the book!!

I kinda think that "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day might fit. (...my shadow's (the) only one that walks beside me...)

I also think that either "The Sound of Silence" or "I am a Rock" by Simon & Garfunkle might work.

Good luck!
