If you don't want your pet visiting the Grim Reaper soon, I suggest you do research on any pet first before even purchasing them. That includes low maintenance ones too.
A life is a life. You have to take care of these critters needs, wants, and habitat maintenance first before you give them a home.

fish can be low maintenance providing you have the right equipment. My daughter recently got a kitten the only thing we do is put food in its bowl, usually once a day, make sure his water is always fresh and clean his litterbox once a day. You can get water and food dispensers so that you don't have to do that as often and you don't have to clean the kitterbox once a day. I was really suprised at how little effort it was, certainly less than fish, and a lot cuter.

Low maintains, I know reptiles are nice, but try guppies. They are fun to watch and they have baby's if you get a mom and dad. Then if you want, you can put some babies when there are too many and feed them to the water turtle.

maybe you should try a rat they are quite cute u can toilet train them with a small dish and kitty litter and you can play with them when ever females are heaps better than the males and make sure you only keep one if u dont want the smell they are very cheap to feed and your pet shop should help you with this or try looking them up on the web

low maintenance as far as cost or actual interaction? For cost, look in the free section of the newspaper! For interaction..... fish. You never have to talk with them or play with them.
Birds are pretty cheap but unless you have two of them, you have to spend a lot of time with it because they are very social animals. I have two of them, right now one has its head tucked into its back, and the other....... does also. They're sleepy, next to me listening to alternative rock music.

turtles are messy, dirty ,and require a lot of care. rabbits are a better way to go. mine is very hardy and requires little care. but u still have to feed and change water, like all living creatures. good luck!

A tortoise, not a water turtle. Try a land tortoise.
