Aside from the obvious, free will, there are many factors that contribute into shaping us to be what we are:

1. ENVIRONMENT: Sometimes, we are the product of our environment.

2. IMMEDIATE AND NOT-IMMEDIATE FAMILY: Kids grow up being influenced, to some extent, by their families' values.

3. IGNORANCE AND ILLITERACY: This leads to not knowing any better.

4. POVERTY: The desire to "HAVE" in a materialistic society like ours.

5. GREED: It is the source of all evils.

6. DISCERNING FACULTY INCAPABILITY: When you are unable to discern GOOD from BAD.

7. PSYCHOLOGICAL ISSUES.

The above is the basics, but the list is long.
