For example, sometimes he cries because he wants to be held & when i hold him, he stops. Other times he's hungry, & when i feed him, the crying stops. And then, when he cries for a long time, i tried soothing him, feeding him, singing to him, & held him in my arms, but he just won't stop crying. Why is that?

If he cries continuously and does not stop (by diaper change, being burped, feedings etc.) he could be colicky or gassy. Are you burping him often? There can be several things but usually a baby that cannot be soothed is colicky. Colic is usually in bottle fed babies due to air in the bottle. I only know this because I have had 18 neices and nephews a few of them which have been colicky.
17 weeks pregnant with first.

I think it could very well mean he's in pain when he won't stop crying in spite of what you do. Therefore, try something different.
Babies get alot of stomach upset more than any other type of pain. My daughter had colic when she was an infant and cried
all the time. You'll know it's colic if he throws up after you feed him. Even if it's not colic, it could just be gas or a tummy ache for no reason. Heat and rocking are very comforting to babies.
Take a small sock and fill it with rice. Tie the open end in a knot. Heat it up in the microwave to make a nice little heating pad. Just give it 20 seconds at a time til you get it warm but not hot. Lay it gently on his tummy and move it around in slow circular motions.
It's so soothing. While you're doing that, you can rock him if you
have a rocking chair. Also, jazz or classical music is very relaxing for infants. Dim the lights, play some slow music, use the heat, rock him. In case it is gas, you can try burping him, too.
Also, sometimes babies are lactose intolerant and they can't
stomach cow's milk. You may want to talk to your pediatritian
about switching him to a soy formula, which for most babies
is alot easier to digest. If all these things don't work, take him in.
He could have something like an ear infection but of course he's
too young to show you signs of it like pulling at his ear. I hope
this helps. I know it's tough when you have a newborn baby
and especially if you're a new mom. But don't worry, you'll
figure it all out! Good luck.

The main reason I found will all of my children crying at that age was simply wind. Unfotunately it is very painful for a little one and you can usually tell if it is wind with a slight blue tinge around the lips or when bubby is pulling their knees up.
Here are a couple of tips that may help:
Try a little warm water in a bottle to help move the wind
Take the nappy off and gently massage just at the top of the leg in the groin area, you will actually feel little lumps there, just be gently
Even easier is to gently hold the baby's ankles and push there knees slowly up to their belly, this will also help to move things.
To help prevent wind, make sure bubby is burped well after each feed. Hope this has helped.

My daughter was crying like that for hours a day. She was screaming more than crying and was obviously in pain. Since she's been treated for acid reflux, there's not been any inconsolable crying fits. She still is fussy at times, and she cries, but it is very different than what she was like before. I would talk to your doctor about the possibility of reflux before chalking it up to colic.

if you bottle feed your baby then maybe it's the wrong formula. try switching to a soy formula instead and see if that helps you out. I had the same problem with my baby sister and with my daugther. It could also be colic or just gas pains. try getting some drops to put in his/her formula if the soy don't help you.

I'm not a parent but, please trust me in this - never listen to what people say. They all trust on their own experience w/ babies but every baby is different. The best thing to do is to consult a health care professional or a person whose job is taking care of babies.
