I had a man give me an estimate of $1300 for labor. If they don't have to tear anything out. It's a 1 story house with just a plain pitch roof. Is this price in that ball park considering I'm buying the supplies?

Yes, that sounds about right. Make sure you only go with a license and insured contractor. Make sure you see the license and insurance too. Check to make sure with the city you live in also. It is a good idea to get references and always a start and completion date on a (written) contract with anyone working on your home. Never let anyone work on your home without a written contract. I stress again with start and completion dates too. so many people have been left in a mess because they do not get this written into a contract or they let someone do work without a contract and they try to charge more after the job is done then agreed to.
A second layer of shingles is fine on a home but never go more then two. After two layers they would have to be removed or torn off as they say. That would cost more then but is needed. the lowest estimate will not necessarily do the best work, get references, check everything. Get a few different estimates.

if i did my guess-tament right , you have 2000 sq ft of roof.
2000 divded by 27sq ft in one sq of shingles = 74.07 or 75 squares
1300 dollars divided by 75 squares is way to cheap 17. a square
with no tear off,
I would find some one else,
At Lowe's they charge $115 a sq that would be near $8700. and it would be with tear off near eve metal, i just bid a 3400 sq ft roof for 9000. tear off and clean up that is very important CLEAN UP
That might sound like a golden deal but you will end up with a goose egg over your head
if you do go with these pplse get a bill for the shingles and pay that , GIVE THEM NO LABOR money till you are satified. NO matter what story you get Not to give them any labor money,
find out how many men are on the job and check there insurance numebr call the company.
I would find some one that would charge a bit more, i know that sound silly but this is too good to be true.rememeber NO UP FRONT MONEY get bill for shingles

good luck

Hmm. actually, that is a bit low. do you mean they are not taking off the old shingles? Don't do that. any roofer that would do that is not a good one. It can be done, of course, but tends to cover up and hide things that may need to be addressed. Make sure whoever you hire is fully licensed and carries their own Workman's comp insurance. That is where a lot of the cost comes in, Workman's insurance for roofers is high priced. If they don't and one of the workers gets hurt on your property, you could wind up paying out tons of money. If you have homeowners insurance check to see it covers such circumstances. A little checking now could save you a fortune.

My roofing job cost on a similar sized house was about $6000, including 30 year shingles, replace skylight, and replace the chimney flashing, chimney cap and some siding on the chimney. I went through Lowes.

I LIVE IN LIMA, OHIO. I HAD A 2400 SQ.FT. ROOF DONE IN 2002. SINGLE STORY, TORE OFF OLD SHINGLES, REPLACED ALL FLASHING AND INSTALLED RIDGE VENT. $ 6700.00. $1300.00 SEEMS REALLY CHEAP. ALSO, MAKE SURE THEY HAVE THE PROPER INSURANCE. INSIST ON RECEIVING COPIES FOR YOU TO KEEP. I WOULD LET THEM BUY THE MATERIALS. HAVE YOU EVER PICKED UP A BUNDLE OF SHINGLES? THEY AREN'T LITE.

tootall 11 is absolutely correct. Follow what he says. There is such a thing as "To Cheap" when it comes to home repairs.

i think it depends on the material. Shale is more expensive but it is waterproof and natural. you also have stucco. keep in mind the area you live. places with lots of sun may heat and crack cheaper materials, and yet excessive acid rain water like in the new england states may use something else.
