When the Marshall found gold at Sutter's Mill in 1848 John Sutter's name became forever embedded in history. How many people, though, realize the immense role Sam Brannan played in actually creating the rush to gold in California?

I've listed some historical links for you to find information about Sam Brannan (and a good link to help you with writing a thesis statement). I think Sam was responsible for actually starting the "rush" to find wealth. Certainly the gold was discovered by Marshall, but gold had been discovered in California before with no resulting gold rush. I think you could write a compelling paper (with lots of good references) about how Sam Brannan affected California history. Hope I've helped.

Just a thought, my heritage is American Indian. Things like the "gold rush" only helped settlers take over land that was not theirs.
