Well everything that everyone else has said seems to work (except for "getting fat" one. I'm not sure how that can help you!). What helps me most is swimming! The more I swim and the more I can hold my breath under water, the longer I can hold my notes when singing.

Best thing would be to find a choral teacher at a college or school with a good music program to give you some tips and to make sure you pick up technics that will help you and not hurt you in the long run.
Learning breathing technics is certainly vital. If there isn't a good instructor within traveling distance, you may just be able to call a college, pretend to be interested in taking a class or something, if need be, to get to talk to a professional who'll answer your question.
When I was in marching band, many of the horn players were very practiced at different technics to help with proper breathing to keep a good flow of oxygen, not only to maintain long notes at forte, but also to keep from passing out. Know any marching band members?

Make sure you're singing from your diaphragm, and make sure you have proper breath support. When you breath, you want your stomach to go out, and you don't want your shoulders to raise. Also, a nice breath excersize is to breath in for 6 seconds, hold your breath for 6 seconds, then make a hissing sound breathing out for 6 seconds. Each time your do it, increase the time by 2 seconds or so. Do it until you feel comfortable doing 14 seconds or so. You will be amazed at how much longer you'll be able to hold a note.

seriously, get fat
if you ain't born with it, you need another 5-10 years practicing.........but the weight helps distribute your tone.........i hold notes way longer at 255 than anytime when i was 180-200

LAY DOWN ON THE FLOOR AND PRESS YOUR HANDS DOWN ON YOUR STOMACH WHILE YOU SING. THAT WILL STREGTHEN YOUR VOICE. I SAW IT ON A MOVIE AND I TRIED IT AND IT'S TRUE.
