if i looked on google earth at a map which had a scale of 107m to every 7cm, with a street 11cm long (on the screen) then i redrew that map by hand slightly larger, so that the street was 15cm long, what would the scale be and how do you work that out???

Let the actual length of the road be x meter
Hence x/Length in map=107/7 m
or, x/11=107/7 m
x=107*11/7 m
x=168.143
now the new scale is
or 15cm for 168.143 m
or 1 cm=11.21m

Using the original map scale the street length is
(107 m)*11/7
Your new scale would be ((107 m)*11/7)/(15 cm), or
1177 m to 105 cm There aren't any common factors, so you have 11.21 m to 1 cm

the new scale is proportional to the old one, since you are onlly enlarging the picture.

if the new street measures 15cm instead of 11cm for the same actual distance, then the scale would need to be oppositely corrected (known as "inversely proportional") to the measurement:

(11cm/15cm) * [107m to every 7cm] which is

78.46m to every 7cm or

11.21m to every 1cm

OK those guys make no sense to me here it goes keep up

107 divided by 7 =15.285

so we know 1cm=15.285m OK now

lets multiply that by our 11and we get 168.142

now were gonna divide that by our 15 and we get

11.209 so 1cm=11.209m and if you just like that base
7 for some reason multiply that by 7 and get 78.4

so 7cm=78.4m

use a scientific calculator and use all the decimal places if you wish yours to match mine

7/107 = 11/x solve for x then

11/x = 15/y plug in x then solve y

you make a proportion of :
7 11
-- = ---
107 x

cross multiply 11x107=n
n divided by 7 would be x/your answer
