I'm looking online to buy a formal dress. I found one I really like but it says spot clean only. What? It's polyester and does have some bead work on it, but why spot clean? Wouldn't I be able to hand wash it or have it dry cleaned. What exactly does spot cleaning mean? I don't understand how you can only spot clean clothing.

The bead work is the issue. They would melt in dry cleaning solution. The way they are stitched on is why you can't hand wash the item. For spot cleaning a formal dress, don't try it at home. Use your dry cleaners and make sure they know to ONLY spot clean it. (Only needed when there is a spot on it.) Be careful of what deo you use when wearing the dress and put perfume on and let dry BEFORE putting on the dress. Hope this helps!

Many formal pieces are dry clean only or spot cleaning (usually done by dry cleaners). Usually your suppose to wash them as seldom as possible. Spot cleaning is usually for VERY delicate items, the beads may be able to come off or be ruined with washing or the chemicals in dry cleaning. Also the threads can loosen if wet, so hand washing is not recommended. I'd be surprised at a formal piece that was 100% polyester, it could be blended with something not able to withstand a nuclear war.

Spot cleaning is just that. That means you only clean the part of the garment that has a spot on it.The reason for this is that you must be very careful so as the beads don't fall off. Dry cleaning is taking a steam iron over the garment, which may take off your beads and rubbing the whole thing in hand washing may also knock some beads off.

Spot cleaning is a specialised form of cleaning done by Drycleaners on delicate clothing such as this dress. It is usually expensive. Since the dress has beading on it it is necessary to be carefull that they do not get damaged by 'rubbing' against each other, harsh chemicals can melt them and they can lose the lustre coating so you are left with just little white ordinary/opaque beads. Soap powder/liquid wash detergents can also cause uneven discolouration of the fabric, shrinkage, 'water' spotting, fading and your lovely dress could end up looking like a 'rag'.
