Athletes Dying while actively playing a sport?

Why have we witnessed so many athletes "suddenly" dying in the past couple years?

Was it like this "back in the day?"

it did used to happen to lots of athletes, 1 thing is back in the 30's-60's lots of athletes had to be called to Army, Navy etc....and died overseas, and lots of athletes did die from getting hit too hard in the head by a puck or anything when NHL didn't have helmets yet, and from shooting crimes right near there hometowns and many other ways it happens today that happened back then
