(Note: Sophisticated - as in, wall-of-sound production; complex, 'mature' arrangements, melodies and chords.)

Sub-questions:

Could that explain the appeal?

Or do you disagree with my question?

(F.y.i. I don't collect today's music. I'm trying to figure out its appeal.)

Another note: I'm referring to the artistic appeal and musicality. I'm not talking about the money side of it.

No I don't believe so...I think the older musicians were the geniuses not only because they were the ones that came up with it all and the musicians today are partly followers and a lot of the stuff today is all the same....but they were more sophisticated because they worked very hard to get where they were....and it took time to achieve great things...today it's like anyone can be a musician, even if you don't have talent or anything....that's only my opinion though...you are entitled to yours :D

As far as I'm concerned that is definately NOT the case. The majority of todays music is just too generic. By this I mean if you took a line from any verse of any song it would fit into any other song in the same genre. There are a few musicians today still making good quality music with some actual thought put into it rather than "hey this is hot, lets do this" but not many.

I don't really think I can say that today's music is more sophisticated, it just uses more computers for sound effects. That doesn't make it sophisticated. I am someone who listens to rock, so don't get me wrong, but when you say sophissticated I think of classical music, that is music that was written with real talent. It had real arrangements, it had melodies that grabbed you. Classical music is lasting, it goes on for decades and never goes out of style, it can't be replaced. I don't understand most of the music that is out today. There are some groups that seem to have some talent, but they seem to be more of throw backs to older groups and they seem to be the groups that don't seem to rely so heavily on computers, the groups that are more accoustic. I don't want to think that I am becomning my parents who always said that rock was a passing fancy and would die out quickly, please, no, don't let that be me. But, I do find myself listening to older rock and not knowing much of what is new anymore, it just isn't real music, it's not sophisticated, it's becoming noise, and too much of it is still rap.

certainly not the crap that's on the radio. all of the sophisticated, complex music is all the stuff that's not been dumbed down by record industry ceo's who are just in it for the money.

the appeal of music on the radio has to do with chord structures and note arrangements, but that does not mean they are sophisticated or complex. it has to do with how much money record industries can pay radio stations to play their music.

HA-ha-ha-ha.....god. yeah
i thinks its all about the marketing....this is the appeal....nice package (good looking men and women) who perform (dance and look hot) forthe camera.....and thats it.

no talent is really necessary.
this is how the market is driven. Talent or heart have little to do with the appeal of todays music....though there is some good talent out there....buried underneath spears, simpson, 50, etc.

Music like what you are talking about usually isn't going to be on the radio and you have to search deep to get it.

Music is commercial. It sells itself. There is alternative music, but it is also commercial. There is very little music that is worth. I like KMFDM and Lords of Acid.
