I don't understand it. You can put the same ingredients between two slices of bread. I guess what I am after is what really makes a hoagie a hoagie??

You make a sandwich at home.

A hoagie is bought from a Mom and Pop store on the corner, and it has lunch meat, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and a delicious oil on an Amaroso roll.

I live in Los Angeles. I cannot get a hoagie here :-(

Can you send me one?

You gotta use the right roll to make a hoagie and S Philly has the best bakery's for rolls and Amoroso's is one of the most popular rolls to use. But it isn't a hoagie if it is on bread it is just another sandwich.

A hoagie is made on a hoagie roll which contains more breading than a thin piece of bread.

I grew up in Philly and have heard many variations, but i beleive the commonly accepted historical source for the word hoagie, came from the old time Hog Island workers and the unusually long , overstuffed sandwiches they became known for bringing to work with them. It was often two meals for them since their shifts were so long. It became a popular regional treat and then grew from there! A hoagie is basically a sandwich overstuffed on a long roll, normally italian. And if you are from the area it has to be Amoroso's bread ... mmmmmmm I miss it!

A hoagie is a type of bread, a sandwich is a general term. All hogies are sandwiches, but not many sandwiches are hoagies.
