Before you upgrade the RAM on the notebook, you need to check the amount of RAM your notebook supports. As far as my knowledge is concerned, most of the notebook only supports 2 GB or RAM. So that makes, 1 GB in each memory slot. You may contact the notebook manfucturer to know the correct memory upgrade specification of the notebook. If the notebook does not support 3 GB, then you wont be able to upgrade the RAM to 3 GB.

Typically you don't need 3gb, even if supported (Vista).
Go to Crucial.com and do the memory scan, it will tell you what you can and can't do with your RAM.
If you need more performance than 2gb can give you, the next big (replaceable) item is your hard drive. Going to a 7200rpm with a good cache will make a nice difference if currently have a slow drive (typical in laptops).
If you are after performance, there are a number of things you can do to maximise your pc, stopping a number of services and startup programs (run MSCONFIG), etc.

No, expecially if your using xp, it can only handle 2 gb's.. you need 4 ram slots and vista..
