Answer to #3: They exist along a series of cracks in the Earth's crust known as The Ring of Fire. it is called the Ring of Fire because the series of cracks reaches all the way around the earth.

the answer to number one is because the pressure at the deepest depth is greatest, therefore you need the thickest part of the wall to be at the greatest pressure point
