The Sphinx is made of the local limestone that the Egyptians called "whitestone". It is actually a very pale cream when first quarried but time has turned the stone to a yellow/fawn color.
It thought by most Egyptologists that The Sphinx would have been painted.
It has a nemes headress, that is by tradition blue and gold horizontal bands. The body may have been yellow or red.
Its face would have been yellow,as this is the colour that portray's men skin in Ancient Egypt.
While women were almost always painted as cream or almost white.
The Sphinx had a beard, which has recently been located nearby in the sand. It would likely have been painted black.
In all it would have been a very colourful image.
The Sphinx has long lost its original paint work. It is now in quite a bad condition despite being recently restored.
The whole Sphinx is suffering from a condition refered to as "rock cancer".
The rock is slowly being eaten away by the pollution of modern times.
Since Ancient times it has spent most of its time buried or partially buried in the sand, and was only totally uncovered in the early part of the last century.

Sphinx was built out of lime stone, so it was originally white, but after thousands of years it is more of a beige/ light brown color.
