I agree with you. It was very long and slow. And the Japanese story didn't make a lot of sense to me. I thought it was kind of a wannabe Crash. The directing was good, but the storyline was lacking. I think the point of the movie is that no matter what language you speak or where you're from, communication and understanding one another is most important and essential. People love Babel for some reason. I don't think it should have been nominated for Best Picture.

I thought it was kind of pointless and depressing actually.

Its not really the connections that are stretched in my opinion. There all sorts of weird unexpected connections between people in the world.

What I thought was stretched was all the misery and trouble falling on them all at once. And the Japanese part of the "story" was extremely depressing and didnt make much sense to me.

'Bable".....meaning not making sense, not understanding....
They used that name because there was a lack of understanding, due to language barriers. Most of these things that happened in the movie happened because of misunderstandings. The stories were very connected. The Mexican woman had the children of the couple in Morocco, the woman who was shot by a gun that was given to the Moroccan dude from the Asian guy with the deaf daughter......all of their problems came from language/understanding barriers. Get it?
