All GSM phones should work with any SIM card unless a carrier specifies to the phone manufactuer they want that disabled. Cell carriers don't make jack off the phone. In Europe you can take any GSM phone and use it with any carrier.

You can get the phone's MSL unlocked by contacting the original wireless provider for that phone. If you've honored the contract on a regular phone then you can get the MSL code or if you bought it straight from the manufactuer it should already be unlocked.

NOKIA sells unlocked phones straight from their website you can use some of them with any carrier regardless of them being GSM or CDMA.

Unlocking a phone is tricky and must be done by a pro because after three tries the phone is useless. Usually the tech support departmet of a carrier will have to help you.

Depends how old it is, Before AT&T and Cingular jointed they were using stickers as SIM cards. (note) if the SIM card has three corners two buttom and one lefth top should work.
Asta la vista....
