Gossip is a derogatory term, but let's consider this. There is a rule that divides the utility of gossip. If this gossip has value in reducing uncertainty then it is good, ..abstractly. If it makes things less clear then it is bad. We can add to this using truth that will cause disproportionate harm as its objective. This last case is deception so it is covered under the first rule but people tend to want to be lawyer and find loopholes. I define deception as bad even when some part is informative.

Gossip is not a good thing but then again in certain instances it is not bad either. A conversation between two people that was based on gossip could, in a sense, create a bond between them and increase their friendship quotient. On the other hand people who get their kicks off of spreading gossip and other people's business are only doing so because they enjoy hearing the sound of their own voiceand are not in any way concerned about someone's feelings.

gossip is just something to pass the time, can be good or bad. since now it is profitable, it is considered good. :P
